united 93

beth and i saw united 93 tonight. one might think that a post-9/11 film might be a great date movie, but i'm here to say that despite the nearly empty theater, the atmosphere was a bit too somber for making out. and obviously date movies are only worthwhile if there is kissing. still, i would have liked to see a couple more couples turn out to see this film. after all, it's only been a week since opening day – i'm a little surprised that beth and i got two rows to ourselves for such an important movie.

in any case, you can read good reviews elsewhere. in short, i don't see how someone could have made a better film about this tragedy. united 93 was poignant without being preachy; it was touching without being (overly) dramatic. perhaps the greatest testament to the emotional punch of this film is that our audience of 20 left the theater silently. indeed, the hush reminded me of a maundy thursday service or compline at st. mark's. it was a holy quiet.

andrew david 'five pictures' yelapa, mexico. (yes, i know. it's a little odd to include pictures of a mexican cemetery in a post about a US historical film. still, they seemed somehow appropriate. also, aesthetically i didn't feel they were worth a post of their own. by the way, i doubt you find many pictures of the yelapa cemetery elsewhere; it's a little off the beaten path.)

A Study in Sunlight
these pictures are from my latest annual backpacking trip with steve. you know the drill. i'm lookin' for photography advice. that is, let me know how i could have improved these fotoes AND whether any of them appear print-worthy (an * means that i'm considering them) AND any other thoughts regarding the pictures or my time in the enchantments.

*1. Andrew David, 'Pensively Beth' Ninilchik -- i think this might have been nice with a little more colour and contrast
*2. Andrew David 'Mt. Redoubt' Nilnilchik -- for some reason mt. redoubt didn't live up to its name in this pic. if it were bigger and brighter, it would offer more contrast to the flowers. as is, its too...backgroundy
3. Andrew David 'Nilnilchik sign' Nilnilchik -- not sure why i decided to post this one. i think i just like signs.
4. Andrew David, 'Potholey Road' Homer -- i like the rust in this picture, but not sure how to accentuate its coolness. oh, well. we actually had to turn back on this road because the potholes and 70% grade would have capsized our rigs.
*5. Andrew David 'Spit' Homer -- perhaps the colours are too washed out here...? i was hoping to let Homer speak for herself.
*6. Andrew David 'Homer berries' Homer -- as you can perhaps tell, i'm not great at night photography (this is at 11:3o or so). i was hoping that the berries would be a little bit more like my shirt in picture #8 -- bright red
7. Andrew David, 'Searching' Ninilchik -- i like this one of beth and the ruffles eating stranger.
8. beth the s.o. 'Run aground' Nilnilchik -- about 60 years ago, when they first built this boat, they apparently had sky-coloured paint.
